Stone Sculpture with Nomadic Stone : Two Day Course

  • The Rewild Project CIC Kensley Sheds, Speech House Road Broadwell, England United Kingdom (map)

Come and visit the stunning Forest of Dean and learn the technique of hand carving - taking away your very own stone sculpture at the end of the day!

Suitable for complete beginners and improvers, using a fairly soft yet durable locally sourced limestone, to allow everyone to enjoy creating a sculpture and improving in technique as the day unfolds.

Stone Carving

Max will begin by talking a little about types of stone and how to plan your design. You will then be assisted to find the right piece of stone, and taught some basic carving techniques such as looking for the grain, then roughing out and later on defining the form, before finally polishing

There will be a number of different tools available - no experience of tool use necessary, this is accessible and very easy to pick up and by the end of the weekend you will have a fine piece of art to go home with.

About Nomadic Stone

After doing his apprenticeship at Hereford Cathedral, Max Cotterill founded Nomadic Stone with the vision to create a traveling stone masonry workshop to help inspire and educate people in the artistry of this traditional craft.

Max has travelled across the UK and beyond show casing his skills and collecting multiple craftsmanship awards along the way!

The Day

On the day of the workshop we invite to you arrive half an hour early so you can grab a cup of something warm and get to know Kensley Sheds and The Rewild crew.

The workshop will start at 10:30am where you will design your very own bespoke, stone sculpture with the guidance of Nomadic Stone’s founder, Max, with an array of his favourite books for inspiration.

We will break for lunch around 12:45pm.

After lunch you will continue to carve your stone sculpture with Max’s support.

At 4:30pm we will end our workshop.

On the second day you will continue to complete your sculptures following the same schedule as above.

Profits

The Rewild Project is a Not for Profit, Community Interest Company, and Social Enterprise. It is our mission to support local craftspeople and promote heritage craft skills. We Rewild People by teaching these skills of self reliance and resilience for an uncertain future.

After the craftspeople are paid, and costs are covered we put any profits back in to the community with our ‘weekday sessions for disadvantaged groups’ a lifeline for many local people who we pick up each day and bring to Kensley Sheds and others sites to build community, skills, and share nutritious hot, locally produced food.
